What is a second opinion on a kitchen quote?

A second opinion means an independent kitchen specialist reviews a quote you've already received: what exactly is listed, whether the price matches what you're getting, and whether anything is unclear or missing. It's not just a repeat of your own gut feeling — it's a professional read from someone who works with this type of quote daily, which matters more when the quote, and the showroom conversation behind it, was entirely in Dutch.

This is most useful right before you'd otherwise sign: you already have a quote in hand, but want confidence before committing to it. A second, independent look costs you little time and can catch a missing line item or a lower appliance tier than you assumed — especially easy to miss when you're reading contract Dutch as a second language.

What to check in a Dutch kitchen quote

Dutch kitchen showrooms typically start from a "showroom price" — a reference price with room for a discount already built in — rather than a fixed net price. A discount can look large without telling you anything about whether the final, itemised price is actually fair for what's included; the showroom price and the percentage off are marketing details, the net total for a fully specified kitchen is what matters.

The appliance package (apparatuur) deserves its own look: check that oven, hob, extraction, fridge and dishwasher are each listed individually with brand, type and energy label, rather than bundled into one "appliances complete" line. The same goes for installation (montage) — confirm what it covers, including plumbing and electrics — and for any extra work (meerwerk) that might only surface after you sign, such as adjustments to the room or additional connections.

Then there's the deposit (aanbetaling). A deposit of 15 to 25% of the total at signing is common practice in the Netherlands. If the kitchen company is CBW-erkend (a recognised trade association membership), the deposit is capped at 15% under the CBW terms; by Dutch law, a seller may never ask for more than 50% upfront. If your quote asks for a deposit noticeably above these figures, or for the full amount in advance, that alone is worth a second opinion before you sign.

Because the specialist is reviewing a specific quote rather than starting from scratch, this is usually quicker than requesting several new quotes from different companies. You don't need to redo your entire wish list; the specialist works from what you've already been offered.

What a specialist looks at when checking your quote

A specialist looks beyond the total figure at the bottom. That includes the quality and finish of the fronts, the type of hinges and drawer runners, the tier of the appliances offered, and the worktop material and thickness. It also includes the less visible items that get overlooked in a quick first read: whether installation and connections are fully included, the delivery date, the deposit percentage, and the warranty terms stated.

The specialist sets these points side by side and flags where the quote is unclear or where something is missing, so you don't have to guess whether a listed item is standard practice. That overview also helps if you go back to the original company with questions — you can ask specific, informed questions instead of a general "is this fair?"

What a second opinion is not

A second opinion is not a guarantee of the lowest price on the market. It's an independent assessment of the quote you already have, not a promise that a cheaper alternative always exists — sometimes a counter-quote simply confirms that your original offer is already reasonable. Keuken in Beeld doesn't sell kitchens itself and isn't a party to the eventual purchase; the service connects you with a specialist who reviews the quote and, where there's room, makes a counter-proposal.

It's also not legal advice. A second opinion covers price, composition and specification — not contract law, cancellation rights or liability questions. For those, consult a legal advisor or, in the Netherlands, the Juridisch Loket. Treat a second opinion as a practical check on value for money, not a negotiating trick to force a lower number, and not a substitute for reading your contract terms yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How many specialists see my quote?

Does a second opinion guarantee a lower price?

No. The specialist assesses whether your quote is reasonable and proposes a counter-quote where there's room to improve on it, but sometimes the review confirms that your original quote is already fair. There is no price guarantee.

What do I need to request a second opinion?

Usually the quote itself is enough, as a PDF or a clear photo, including the specified cabinets, worktop and appliances. The more complete the quote, the better a specialist can judge whether the price matches what's included.

Can I get a second opinion if I don't have a quote yet?
